Can You Crack It? That Overlooked Dutch Invention Which Forged the Modern World

There are numerous contenders for the title of “planet’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.

As per a recent publication, however, that title belongs to a mechanised sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.

“Before mechanised sawing, constructing a modest merchant vessel required around ten sawyers working over three months,” notes the author. “Using wind-powered sawmills, the same quantity of processed timber might be manufactured in less than a week.”

Thanks to this rapid mechanical cutter, that converted logs to planks with virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could build ships more quickly compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Netherlands maritime, financial as well as artistic dominance in Europe and the world.

The Original Genuine Manufacturing Device

The inventor's sawmill, contends Dávila, was “humanity’s first true industrial apparatus.” A wind turbine turned a gear. One component transformed its rotary movement to vertical action to power the saw. Another component changed that same spinning movement into a sideway’s motion advancing the timber to the blade. A ratchet system moved the log ahead a measured step per cycle.

“Every component was simple on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them in order that the machine acted in a precisely synchronized order, cutting on every downward motion and moving on every return stroke. This constituted an astonishingly intelligent application of fundamental parts.”

A fact that brings us up to the current puzzle. The task is you to reimagine a key the basic concepts behind this historic invention.

Round and Up

Construct a machine that turns circular movement into vertical motion. Your available these items only: A rotating disc. Two pegs. Two bars. A “sleeve”, that is a cylinder or housing through which a single the bars will fit perfectly. (Assume you can put things on a base, so the parts don’t collapse.)

I’ll be back later today UK time with the answer.

Meanwhile, PLEASE NO HINTS. Rather, please suggest (less celebrated) candidates for the world’s most impactful creation.
