Catherine's Traditional Christmas Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Charity Helpers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with attendees featuring members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The 1,600 guests will hear a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like award-winning actors.

Centred Around Compassion and Love

The theme of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the well-being of people," the Princess expressed in a letter ahead of the carol service.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The princess has been making her own gradual return to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey can listen to budding artists supported by the Future Talent organisation, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to widen access to musical tuition.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been supported by the organisation, with awards contributing to musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at tonight's service.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," the musician remarked. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

A Sisterly Duo

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, honouree of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett helping to make them.

The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
