British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
