“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
